Possibility to have Shift+key to trigger code?

Is it possible to highlight a portion of text or equation and then, using a keyboard shortcut like Shift+R, trigger a specific piece of code? I'd like to know if this functionality is feasible and what methods might be used to implement it.

edit: nevermind, just figured out that you use the visual option and set the key to an uppercase letter
