Why is this deprecated?

Serious question!

So that people coming here can fully understand the reason for the deprecation, please could you point out the reason for deprecation.  For example it would be good to know if it's some technical blocker or is it just preference, etc.  Knowing this could help others who may want to pursue the rollup route.
